How to Check if Your Car is Under Recall
Is your car under recall? Every year, millions of vehicles are – and there’s an easy way to check whether yours is one of them or not. In 2021, there were 31.8 MILLION* vehicles affected by manufacturer’s recalls for potential safety concerns.
The National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandates recalls in instances where the risk of safety-related issues becomes forefront. Other recalls can be and ARE issued by the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) under a “Voluntary” status. These OEM-issued recalls are less publicized, but no less important for consumers to be aware of.
To check whether your car is under recall, the first thing you will want to do is locate and write down your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This is very easy, as it is listed on your registration, your insurance cards and also on the placard located on the driver’s side door jamb of your car.
Once you have your VIN, you’ll want to head over to the NHTSA’s website and look up the Federal Recall page. Just enter your VIN, and let it search the database for any and all federal recalls. (Keep in mind – the OEM voluntary recalls will not show up on this list. You may have to check your dealership for this information.)
If your car is under recall, then it’s a simple matter of scheduling an appointment with your dealership to have the necessary repairs or modifications taken care of.
Remember: if your car is under recall on the NHTSA’s website, it means that there is an important safety related issue, and it is in your best interest to get it taken care of sooner rather than later. Many people tend to put off taking their vehicles to the dealerships – and that can prove to be a costly – perhaps even deadly mistake.
